Company kickball teams to battle

It’s not too late for businesses to enter teams in the inaugural kickball tournament during Sunday’s Dennis G. Aguiar Portuguese Day in the Park at Gilbert Carvalho Park in Hilo.

Companies can hang their banners on the ballpark fence, promote their businesses and help raise funds for the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce Cultural and Educational Center to be built in 2019 in Hilo.

Shipman Park playground reopens

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announced that Herbert Shipman Park playground in Keaau reopened Wednesday following the completion of improvements.

Work included successful installation of a new playground safety surface, replacement of damaged and missing components and comprehensive cleaning.

The department thanks park users and the general public for their understanding and patience during the playground closure.

CERT training offered in Kona

Would you know how to respond in an emergency or when disaster strikes?

Hawaii County Civil Defense is offering an in-depth Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, basic training course on four consecutive Saturdays starting Feb. 24 at the West Hawaii Civic Center in Kona.

The CERT basic training course provides participants with classroom and hands-on instruction in safety, fire suppression, first aid, light search and rescue, emergency communications and more.

There is no charge for the course, but seating is limited. Training will take place in Building G of the center at 75-5044 Ane Keohakalole Highway.

Choral workshop, concert in Waimea

Internationally known composer, arranger and clinician Mark Hayes is conducting a two-day workshop focused on the art of choral singing from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 16 and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 17 at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Waimea.

The workshop will culminate with Hayes performing his compositions in a vocal music concert, including a piano solo, at 4 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Kahilu Theatre.

Hayes’ music is performed around the world and he has led clinics in Europe, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, South Africa and Canada.

To get familiar with Hayes’ music before the workshop, organizers invite all interested singers and choral directors to attend free sessions from 1-3 p.m. for tenor/bass and 3:30-5 p.m. for soprano/alto on Saturday at St. James’.

Registration for the workshop and music is $65. Tickets for the concert are $10 at the door.
